FireSmart™ Canada is a national program that helps Canadians increase neighbourhood resilience to wildfire and minimize its negative impacts. It was founded in 1993 to address common concerns about wildfire in the wildland urban interface.
Everyone can be FireSmart
With a changing climate, the threat of wildfire has increased significantly for everyone, include those living outside of the wildland urban interface. We all have a part to play when it comes to preventing wildfire and reducing risk. FireSmart Canada has developed practical, effective, and science-based programs that provide you with tools to be better prepared when wildfire occurs.

It all starts with where you live. Research has shown that homes and their surrounding areas are particularly vulnerable to wildfire, which is why FireSmart principles focus on specific actions residents can implement in those areas, also known as the Home Ignition Zone.
Whether you are a homeowner, resident, business, government, or Indigenous community, you too can take small steps that will have lasting impacts.
FireSmart across Canada
You can find FireSmart Canada from coast to coast to coast. We work closely with provincial and territorial chapters to implement and deliver our programs and services. FireSmart liaisons across the country will connect you with our programs whether you are new or have experience with the FireSmart program.
FireSmart™ Canada operates under a mandate from the Canadian Interagency Forest Fire Centre, and is supported by federal, provincial, and territorial wildland fire management agencies and partners with municipal governments and the private sector.
