Engaging the Public
Public education is one of the most challenging components of creating a FireSmart community as many residents do not understand the local threat from wildfire and assume emergency services will be able to protect the community during a wildland urban interface wildfire (WUI) event.
FireSmart Canada has developed a strategic approach to grassroots resident engagement. This approach will start with informing residents to raise general awareness and understanding, right through to empowering residents to take ownership of the risk of wildfire to their homes, properties and neighbourhoods through grassroots mitigation.
The FireSmart Begins at Home Engagement Strategy provides a roadmap to inform, consult, involve, collaborate and empower residents to take ownership and action at home.
