Alberta

Laura Stewart has worked with Alberta Agriculture and Forestry for the last five years as a FireSmart Specialist. Prior to joining the Alberta team, Laura spent four years with a municipal fire department as the Neighbourhood Safety Education Coordinator. In this role, Laura was responsible for coordinating all home fire safety, emergency preparedness, and injury prevention programming. In 2012, FireSmart planning and education were added to Laura’s portfolio and she led a neighbourhood FireSmart program.

Laura oversees the FireSmart Neighbourhoods program for the province and is eager to partner with Alberta neighbourhoods and work towards receiving FireSmart Neighbourhood Recognition!

Rachel Woodhurst

Rachel Woodhurst (she/her) works as the Program Lead for the FireSmart BC Program. Rachel has been with the BC provincial government for 8 years, including BCWS for 3 years as a Dispatcher and Communications Assistant primarily in the Kamloops Fire Centre. During the 2017 fire season, Rachel saw firsthand how impactful the FireSmart Program can be to protect homes. In 2017, Rachel graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in Science Communication and she is passionate about creating and sharing public education campaigns that can help local communities learn about wildfire resiliency to prepare and ultimately change the outcomes when threatened by wildfires. Rachel is grateful to live and work on the unceded, traditional territory of the Secwépemc Peoples.

She is new in the role as Manitoba’s Wildfire Prevention and Communications Coordinator and the provincial FireSmart liaison. She looks forward to collaborating and assisting in integrating the Wildfire Service and communities with prevention and FireSmart initiatives

Based out of Shubenacadie Nova Scotia, Kara has always had a passion for firefighting both as a wildland firefighter and as a volunteer firefighter. As the fire prevention officer her goal is to make neighbourhood members more aware of the dangers of wildland and urban interface and what all stakeholders can do to minimize the impact of such disasters.

Chelsea provides leadership and coordination of the mitigation, fire management agreements and FireSmart programs for Ontario’s wildland fire mitigation program. She has worked in natural resources for twelve years in a variety of areas, including both wildland fire prevention and mitigation.

She is excited to support FireSmart activities and programs across Ontario and with partner organizations.

Camille Harrison is the program lead for the Saskatchewan Public Safety Agency FireSmart Program. Camille has a background in Renewal Resource Management and has been employed with the Government of Saskatchewan’s wildfire division since 2004. Currently working out of Prince Albert in the SPSA’s Mitigation Unit, Camille and her colleagues manage the provinces’ forest fuel mitigation projects around communities to build wildfire resiliency and have conducted case studies on the effectiveness of fuel breaks and the benefits of fuel mitigation.
